Does living near a base help you get hired
Slightly, and less than people think. Travel is paid, so operators genuinely recruit from across the UK and from Ireland and mainland Europe. Where local address helps is on short notice call outs and shutdown work, because the crew who can reach the heliport at four hours notice get the call first.
If you live far from a base, say so plainly and positively on your CV. Something like available for 2/2 rotations from any UK heliport, willing to travel the night before, tells a recruiter you understand how the job works.
The Teesside and Humber wind shift
The biggest growth in UK offshore hiring is no longer Aberdeen. Dogger Bank, Hornsea and the Humber cluster have pulled thousands of roles into Teesside, Grimsby and Hull, and they recruit heavily from oil and gas backgrounds because the safety culture and shift discipline transfer directly.
The catch is tickets. Wind runs GWO Basic Safety Training rather than BOSIET, so an experienced oil and gas hand often needs a GWO course before a wind operator will look at them. The CV also has to be reframed, because wind hiring managers scan for turbine, WTG, SOV, CTV and GWO rather than rig terminology.
